ABSTRACT
The article reports that San Diego, California-based law firm Pillsbury Winthrop LLP has signed a letter of intent to merge with the Washington D.C.-based Shaw Pittman LLP. The transaction, which will catapult the firms into the top 20 law firms of the U.S., is expected to be final in mid-May 2005, according to Sue Hodges, managing partner in Pillsbury Winthrop's office in San Diego. The new firm will operate without a formal headquarters and will be known as Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP. Pillsbury Winthrop is ranked 39th in "American Lawyer" magazine's top 100, while Shaw Pittman ranked 99th in the top 200 firms listed.
