ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the marketing efforts of Alberto Culver Co. in 1999. The personal-care and household products marketer plans to boost its advertising budget this year by 16 percent to as much as $300 million. From 1977 to 1997, the company's sales rose an average 13.2 percent a year on a compound basis, with earnings up 19.2 percent annually. But in the fiscal year ended September 30, sales advanced a scant 3 percent to $1.83 billion, while earnings rose 10 percent to $83.1 million. There was little improvement in the quarter ended December 31, when sales rose 4 percent to $464.6 million and earnings retreated nearly 6 percent to 18.6 million.
