ABSTRACT
The article reports that the worldwide mobile phone unit sales grew 26 percent year-over- year for 3Q04, a strong figure, especially for the time of year, according to Gartner Inc. Carolina Milanesi, Gartner analyst said that historically, the third quarter is seldom strong. The industry expected sales to be flat in preparation for Christmas demand. However, all regions apart from Japan registered year-on-year growth. Milanesi attributed the strength to new handset models and lower prices in mature world markets, along with continued growth in emerging market regions. Nokia led in market share with 30.9 percent, followed by Samsung with 13.8 percent share and Motorola at 13.4 percent. Siemens. LG and Sony Ericsson rounded out the market leaders.
