The article reports that within a forty-year span, the Republic of Singapore has executed a series of coordinated social and economic transitions, resulting in a leap from post-colonial developing-nation status to enjoying one highest standards of living in the world. Prior to 1991, no official bodies in Singapore were charged specifically with guiding bioscience research and development. This changed with the establishment of research councils and boards charged with the mandate of developing long-term, comprehensive growth strategies.
