ABSTRACT
The article presents information on the number of Roma people living in Slovakia. Recent figures put the number of Roma living in the Slovak Republic (SR) at 500 to 800 thousand, which is unrealistic. That would mean that, with 500 thousand Roma, would have accounted for more than 66 percent of the population increase in the Slovak Republic. If there were to live 650 thousand Roma in Slovakia, the total population increase of the SR would have involved solely the Roma population. These inaccurate estimates, however, had a considerable effect on public opinion, both, in the Slovak Republic and abroad. According to the calculations by researcher, B. Vano, the number of Roma in the SR in 2000 was likely to be within the range of 360 to 365 thousand.
