The article reports that municipal bond issuance began 2005 with a bang as issuers sold $22.37 billion through 724 issues, a 7.6 percent increase from January 2004, when borrowers tapped the market for $20.79 billion through 850 issues, according to figures from Thomson Financial Inc. The value of last month's issues ranks second only to the $27.1 billion that were issued in January 2003. Still, the relatively high dollar total surprised many strategists because the general feeling around the municipal market is that supply has been short and money has been sitting on sidelines.
