ABSTRACT
This article presents a reply to an editorial by John McIlroy and Alan Campbell on the history of the Communist Party of Great Britain. The author began serious research on the subject in 1992. The research was painstaking, and involved a great deal of works on archives, not just in Great Britain, but also, and extensively, in Moscow, where the author was the first non-party scholar to look at the CPGB records in the Comintern archive in real depth. He was determined to produce a serious study of the relationship between the party and the Comintern. The end result was a number of articles published in respectable, scholarly journals, a paper in a collection of essays, and most, most importantly, a monograph, 'The British Communist Party and Moscow, 1920-1943', published by the Manchester University Press in 2000. McIlroy and Campbell have labelled the author as a revisionist and launched a sustained series of attacks upon his works. Although the author does not consider that anything he wrote was libellous, he agreed to write the piece to offer some reply to the issue. This is because he feels that it is important to make a few key points. First is that he stands completely by the contents and arguments of his book. And secondly, it is important that a key point about his argument regarding the CPGB is reiterated.
