This article reports on fire standard for high strength concrete. Balloting of a proposed standard for designing and detailing high-strength concrete columns for better performance in fire is under way. If the ballot passes, the American Concrete Institute will this year publish its first fire standard for high-strength concrete. The proposed standard says that special column detailing, achieved through the arrangement of the reinforcing steel, should be used if high temperature is a matter of concern, says Long Phan, research structural engineer at the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Building and Fire Research Laboratory, Gaithersburg, Madison.
