ABSTRACT
This article discusses proposals for improving the transportation situation in Hawaii. Hawaii's legislative session opened last week with some Democratic lawmakers suggesting that a new transit authority with taxing power is the only way to address traffic problems on the state's most populated island. Highway improvement projects soak up the lion's share of bonds proposed in the governor's budget for fiscal biennium 2005-2007. Improving the island state's harbors and facilitating inter-island transportation also figures prominently in proposals.
