ABSTRACT
The article presents information on a court case in which Danville, Virginia, homeowner Carl Norton wanted to know when the city ordered him to replace a newly installed glass-paned door with a wooden one. Norton owns an 1884 Italianate-style house on Main Street in Danville's historic district. After his home was burglarized on three separate occasions in 2001, he replaced his solid wood front door with one containing glass panes, as the police recommended, so that patrol officers could see into the house. The court concluded, the trial court erred in determining the issue was fairly debatable, because the city produced no evidence of reasonableness. In the end, the homeowner was able to keep his glass door.
