ABSTRACT
The article presents information on the Civil War-era train station, in Maplewood, New Jersey. When the commuter rail lines came through in the 1860s, the area began attracting a handful of businessmen with an independent streak. The tour guides are volunteers from tbe South Orange-Maplewood Community Coalition on Race. The Coalition on Race, as it is commonly known to residents, confronts issues that most communities on the urban fringes of America only whisper about. Founded a decade ago, when the community was beginning to suffer the debilitating effects of white flight, the coalition organizes frequent and frank discussions on the challenges of maintaining a successful integrated community.
