ABSTRACT
The article predicts the wireless industry's outlook for the year 2005. The author says that the wireless industry posted another banner year in 2004, but 2005 will be critical on several fronts. Finally, WiMax, the wireless technology being promoted by WiMax Forum, will get its first true market test. The cellular industry is reaching maturity and further consolidation could very well be seen. Wireless local area networks are moving into the enterprise space, though the majority of hardware sales are still tied to home networks. With workable security solutions in hand, enterprise sales should finally take the lead in 2005. On the technical front, the industry will still be wrestling with its two biggest constrains, spectrum and reliability. The U.S. cellular industry is coming off a major growth phase that saw the subscriber base grow from 19 million to 170 million lines over the past 10 years, and subscriber growth remained healthy at around 14 percent for 2004. The number of cellular subscribers will likely surpass wireline by 2007.
