An Experimental Study in the Preservation of Poetry Shape

The article focuses on the significance of oral interpretation, that is, the study of literature through the medium of oral performance, for analyzing speech communication, with reference to the oral interpretation of poetry. A major area of concern has been with the transferences of the linear shape of the poem from the printed manuscript to the receivers' minds, the preservation of poetry shape. By applying this concept to the teaching of oral interpretation the reader fulfills an obligation to the author, the poem and the audience. By framing the poem with silences, both interpreter and listener receive more fully the total creative impact of the poem's meaning. Teaching the preservation of poetry shape is a break from traditional teaching methods where students are taught to read simply from one punctuation mark to the next, or to pause only after thought units.
