This article reports that the Hispanic population has introduced new ingredients like corn kernels, garbanzo beans and chili peppers to the confectionery industry and is leaving mouths— and eyes— watering. The trend toward Hispanic candies began a few years ago, where a walk through the tradeshow floor at the National Confectioners Association's All Candy Expo proved extremely Hispanic-friendly. Many of these foreign brands appeal to the U.S. Hispanic population that either grew up with these products or heard their parents talk about them. The c-store channel has long been known as the testing ground for new product introductions in the confectionery industry, and only time will tell whether or not Hispanic candies will really take off in convenience retail. Falls Church, Virginia-based Pop Rocks and Lufkin, Texas-based Atkinson Candy Co. will both introduce candies targeting Hispanics this year, while Los Angeles-based Snackerz Inc. is looking to expand its c-store presence for its bold-flavored Mexican candy line.
