This article reports that for many c-store operations, the most essential traits of a good manager are leadership skills and values. Because the convenience industry is so reliant on speed of service to the customer, c-store managers need to be high-energy individuals who can thrive in a quick-paced environment. They are in charge of making sure the image of the store is appealing, the restrooms are immaculate and the customer goes home completely satisfied. Managers must also have the ability to effectively communicate with employees, vendors and customers for the good of the company and the brand, and finding the right people for the job is no easy task. Maverik Country Stores Inc., a 170-store chain based in North Salt Lake, Utah, similarly calls its store managers "store directors" to reflect what the company believes is the true calling of the position. INSET: How to Get Ahead in C-Stores.
