This article reports that despite continuing challenges and volatility around gasoline and tobacco, the convenience store industry outlook is brighter than it has been in the past four years. According to the third annual Convenience Store News 2005 Forecast Study, the industry-like its other retail brethren — is expected to realize the trickle-down effect of a more positive general economic environment, including jobs growth, an uptick in the housing market, productivity gains and increased consumer spending and confidence. In-store sales on a per-store basis are expected to increase 4.6 percent in 2005, and our category forecasts indicate robust growth in confectionery, packaged beverages and other tobacco sales.
