ABSTRACT
This article focuses on political conditions in Iraq. The struggle for control of the area has played a vital role in fuelling conflict in the region over the past 25 years, from the Iran-Iraq war to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. There is also a fear that Iranian-U.S. enmity could pollute relations between Tehran and the U.S. backed government in Baghdad. Conflict over the Shatt AI Arab waterway could easily provide that spark, yet the only attention paid to the vital waterway since the invasion of Iraq has been in relation to the Iranian detention of eight British Royal Navy personnel on the water.
