SEC Uncovers Auction-Rate Problems

The article reports on some regulatory measures of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). SEC's enforcement staff has uncovered some widespread problems that may constitute securities law violations in broker-dealers' municipal auction rate securities programs. The possibility of enforcement action in this area was raised after A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc. disclosed that it had provided the Securities and Exchange Commission with information about some of its auction rate securities transactions.
