The article reports that Version 2 of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) has been deployed since the summer of 2002 to harvest records describing the content within institutional repositories, eprints archives and local digital collections. The integration of mature, common standards such as XML and HTTP computer network protocol has ensured that the OAI-PMH does not suffer from many problems that have plagued more complicated protocols. The OAI-PMH is a simple protocol. The entire specification is only 36 pages long.
