ABSTRACT

The article focuses on issues related to the Presidential elections in Palestine that are scheduled to take place on January 9, 2005. Many Palestinians, as well as people in the U.S. and Israelis, hoped that Mahmoud Abbas, Yasir Arafat's long-time associate, would be selected to take his place. These expectations were thrown into turmoil, however, when Marwan Barghouti, who originally had decided not to contest the election because he was in an Israeli jail, decided at the last moment that he, too, would run.
