ABSTRACT
The article reports that after 20 years of trying and seven defeats in a row, the Checotah Independent School District No. 19 passed a bond issue last week. Voters approved a $1.7 million proposal to put new roofs on the district's elementary and intermediate schools, winning the required supermajority by a single vote--1,627 to 1,084. General obligation bond elections in Oklahoma must be passed by a 60 percent supermajority. Most of the earlier Checotah bond proposals were approved by a simple majority but did not meet the higher standard.
