This article presents information regarding the Bering Strait Bridge. In 1958, noted bridge designer T.Y. Lin proposed his concept for a bridge linking Alaska and Siberia across the 53-mile-wide Bering Strait. He called it the Inter-Continental Peace Bridge, expressing his wish that it would help foster commerce and greater understanding between the two primary Cold War superpowers, the U.S. and Soviet Union. Lin envisioned the bridge with three levels: the top for vehicular traffic, the middle for high-speed trains and the bottom for oil and gas pipelines. The bridge not only would be the world's longest, but would have to deal with a uniquely harsh environment, massive icebergs, violent seas and temperatures reaching as low as 40° F below zero.
