The "media scandal" has become a cornerstone of contemporary journalism, and a controversial trend in media performance overall. This article evaluates the notion of media scandal as a mass-mediated, globalized phenomenon of major importance in media and cultural studies. The authors show how media scandals occupy a theoretical space between morality and desire by tracing the history of scandal, their defining characterizes, and their role in professional journalism. The article is taken from the edited volume "Media Scandals: Morality and Desire in the Popular Culture Marketplace" (Cambridge, UK: Polity Press; New York: Columbia University Press).
