ABSTRACT
This article discusses various issues related to the telephoney solution tool, IP-private branch exchange (IP-PBX). Without assessments and continuous network monitoring, IP-PBXs are a beast to manage and maintain. After network assessment comes continuous network monitoring. Network monitoring is essential for any IP-PBX using converged cabling for all enterprises, large and small. The IP-PBX reduces call setup and teardown time and allows users to grab bandwidth on demand for inter-office calling. This is an important characteristic of IP-PBXs. But as long as the analog connectivity remains in the core network, the IP-PBXs will not realize their greatest potential. This is another key difference over traditional telephony equipment. As true convergence of the public network evolves into a different form as a digital pipe, the IP-PBXs will offer even greater potential. The ability to integrate network assessment and monitoring into the future IP-PBX and telephony products will be yet another challenge.
