This article gives detailed practical guidance on evaluating the interpretation at six visitor centres in Scotland. In 2002 Scottish Natural Heritage commissioned an evaluation of interpretation in six visitor centres where they had funded or part-funded the work. The geological interpretation centre, aims to present Earth science in a popular way and encourage visitors to explore the geology of the wider area. It is the only attraction that is not primarily indoors. The interpretation is spread along three trails, and includes a roofed, but opensided interpretive area.

Meso- to Neoproterozoic magmatic events are widespread in the Yangtze Block. The geochronology and tectonic significance of the Shennongjia Group in the Yangtze Block are still highly controversial. An integrated geochronology and geochemistry approach provides new insights into the...

Results for elastic compliances of interfacial cracks - quantities that determine change in the overall elastic compliances of a material due to interfacial cracks - are obtained. Such cracks may develop in composite materials as a result of debonding at inclusion/matrix interfaces or at...

  • earth science.  // American Heritage Student Science Dictionary;2009, p106

A definition of the term "earth science" is presented. It refers to any of several sciences, such as geology, oceanography, or meteorology, that specialize in the origin, composition, and physical features of the Earth.

The last decade has seen a major change in the direction and focus of Earth Science research. Increased emphasis on quantitative aspects of geological processes has highlighted scientific problems requiring cross-disciplinary efforts for their solution. Physics of Geological Processes (PGP) is a...

The Gorda plate, the southernmost fragment of the larger Juan de Fuca plate system, is an example of a nonrigidly deforming tectonic accommodation zone or buffer plate, absorbing deformation and allowing the surrounding larger plates to act in a more rigid fashion. Here we present a new...

Visan clastic units and structures at the northwest margin of the upper Paleozoic Maritimes Basin provide information on tectonic events that are only poorly recorded in more central parts of the basin. These continental units are time equivalent to marine sediments of the Windsor Group of...

Detailed 40Ar/39Ar geochronology on single grains of muscovite was performed in the Variscan Tanneron Massif (SE France) to determine the precise timing of the post-collisional exhumation processes. Thirty-two plateau ages, obtained on metamorphic and magmatic rocks sampled along an...

Sediments from the ODP Site 1085A were studied to investigate the impacts of global cooling in the Middle and Late Miocene on the climate in Southwestern Africa. The size composition of the sediment was analysed emphasising the silt fraction. A comparison with the modern grain size distribution...

Graptolites from the Dauphin Formation in the allochthonous Hamburg succession of the Appalachians in Pennsylvania, USA, are late Darriwilian (Da) 3 to early Da 4 age (Middle Ordovician); this age range constrains the timing of the latest depositional episode before the terrane was tectonically...
