ABSTRACT
This article reports that the Street Track Gold Trust was not only the first ever commodity- backed exchange traded fund (ETF), but also was the first ETF to use an initial public offering to corral investors. The product has generated so much liquidity since its November 18, 2004 launch that investment industry observers predict copycat offerings are likely to appear soon. Roughly 160 ETFs are already listed on U.S. exchanges. But both the substance and process of this ETF broke new ground, as bankers cannily chose a standard roadshow to generate interest and educate investors.
