This article focuses on the solution to the pervasive problem of managerial confidence in financial analysis. Management has too many good reasons to be mistrustful of budgets, forecasts, and project evaluations. Managers should always regard numbers about the future with a healthy degree of skepticism, because no one can actually predict the future. But on top of that, management should not have to be concerned that the numbers are bad because of mechanical computer errors or hidden flaws in staff thinking. Software systems of the past have focused on the lowest, most mechanical level of the task to be accomplished. The state of the art had little alternative. Until now, business computer technologists have concentrated on the tasks of calculation, tabular formatting, and graphic display of numbers. Attempts to improve financial analysis and planning include programs that print out pages of spreadsheet row and column notation.
