Power & water

Middle East;Nov2004, Issue 350, p36
The article focuses on natural gas industry in Middle East. While Middle Eastern Gas is generating increasing export revenues for both companies and governments within the region, it has also provided a huge source of feedstock for more local use. The region's first independent power producer (IPP), the Al Manah plant in Oman, has triggered a series of further IPP developments, although most governments are reluctant to allow foreign private companies to take full control. For example, the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority awarded a contract for the redevelopment of the Al Taweelah Al plant to Tractebel and Total but transferred just 40% of the equity in the plant to the two foreign partners, retaining a 60% stake itself. The biggest water and power project in the region is Saudi Arabia's Al Jubail plant, with capacity of 1500MW and 900,000 cubic metres of water a day, although Sumitomo Corp. has won a$ 2.2bn contract to expand capacity still further.
