The article presents information on venture capital investments. With equity venture capital investments expected to surge to roughly $20 billion by year-end. Bowman predicts venture lending will near the $2 billion mark this year. As of the end of September, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers' MoneyTree Survey, VCs had invested $ 15.31 billion into 2,079 deals, up from $13.31 billion on 2,081 deals in the same period in 2003. Unlike traditional venture capital investments, in which VCs plunk down a chunk of cash in exchange for a sizable equity stake in a start-up, venture lenders receive only very tiny equity stakes for their loans. Instead, they make their money on the credit cardlike interest rates of as much as 15% tied to their loans.
