ABSTRACT
Oklahoma state finance director Scott Meacham says there is no truth in the warnings by tobacco companies that passage next week of State Question 713, which would increase the state tax on tobacco products, will harm Oklahoma's towns and cities. The proposal would increase the existing 23-cent excise tax on cigarettes by 80 cents, raising the total tax to $1.03 per pack. Tobacco sales, however, would be exempt from state and local sales taxes, for a net increase of about 55 cents a pack on cigarettes, it also would raise taxes on other forms of tobacco.
