The article discusses the effects of crack cocaine in male prostitution. This ethnographic study took place in the areas between 39th Street and 48th Street on 8th, 9th, and 10th Avenues in New York City. Much of the hustling in Times Square, New York goes on either in the peep shows or in the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Virtually every hustler uses some sort of drug and many are polydrug users. One drug of choice is heroin. While most of the boys initially stated that they only sniffed the drug, many have told in confidence that they do in fact inject it and have, on several occasions, shared their "works." This high risk behavior is compounded when crack and hustling are introduced to the equation. The hustler will smoke crack in order to stay awake so he can hustle to make enough money to purchase more heroin. This cyclical heroin-crack-hustle-heroin process goes on for days. Thus, crack seems to be disrupting the rhythm and flow of hustling. What was once a stable and predictable activity has been reduced to a dangerous and violent scramble for many participants. Crack has led to the eruption of a price war, long standing agreements and traditions regarding the trade are being disregarded, and the exploitation of clients is causing many social relationships to fragment. While this is only one of several pressures facing the hustling community, it is unclear if the existing social arrangements can overcome the problems that crack creates.
