ABSTRACT
The article focuses on Phileria Washington, an instructor at the Foothills Correctional Institution in Morganton, North Carolina, selected as the Correctional Education Association Region VIII Teacher of the Year. Washington is a special education instructor. She is responsible for planning, developing and implementing academic instruction for incarcerated 18-21 year old males who have been identified as exceptional students. As a volunteer for many programs in her community, Phileria continues to exhibit the same quality of dedication and support she gives correctional education.
