ABSTRACT
Reports on the Allied offensive against Germany. Assumption that there is a strong underground movement in Germany with popular support; Hope of Germans that with the Republican Party in power heavy American casualty lists might give the needed impetus to those social forces which could bring about a negotiated peace short of unconditional surrender; Political aim of German power to make the Allied victory as long delayed and as costly as possible; Use of tactical air power by Germans in the land fighting around Caen; Insistence of Nazis on defending to the limit everything their armies have occupied.
