ABSTRACT
This article reports that Spanish and Germans are most likely to drink bottled lager with almost 40% of the adult population claiming to be drinkers. In both France and Britain around one third of consumers drink bottled lager. Lager drinkers, when compared on a global socioeconomic level basis, appear to be relatively more upmarket in Britain and in Germany. Drinkers in France and Spain are somewhat more skewed towards level four. While Germany's top brand, Warsteiner, is drunk at all by less than 30% of the population, in the other three markets the top brand achieves close to 40% penetration of any drinking. Heineken NV and Kronenbourg are the only international lagers appearing in the top five brands in more than one market, but both still only penetrate two markets.
