ABSTRACT
The article describes the deployment of overlay technology by computer firm Time Warner Cable Inc. from Scientific Atlanta Inc. in Houston, Texas that will enable the MSO to offer Scientific Atlanta (S-A) digital boxes with onboard DVR and HDTV capabilities. The overlay approach of S-A has accelerated Time Warner's ability to launch extensive DVR and HD services to 1.7 million homes in Houston. The overlay strategy of S-A first came to light publicly in April when company executives mentioned it during a quarterly conference call. Soon after, a Time Warner Cable official confirmed that the operator had launched a pilot test of the overlay system in Beaumont, Texas.
