ABSTRACT
This article provides information on some recently published books on international relations. The book "Foreign Policy: The Next Phase," by Thomas K. Finletter elaborates the lectures given at the Council on Foreign Relations in the autumn of 1957; the author, the former Secretary of the Air Force, sketches the changes in the complex of international affairs in the last several years, and then discusses the terms of a new policy to meet the new conditions of Soviet power, European uncertainty and Asian unrest. The book "Ideas, People, and Peace," by Chester Bowles develops themes already present in his earlier writings: the crucial significance of the "uncommitted world" and the vital importance of economic aid in the underdeveloped areas, not in place of but as a necessary supplement to military preparedness. The book "Choice for Survival," by Louis J. Halle deals with the problem of how "to arrest the gravitation of international politics toward the destructive extreme of all-out war." While seeing little prospect of "any categorical limitation of war" he is primarily concerned with holding violence within limits and keeping the future open.
