This article presents information about network technology. A sea change is coming in the network standards world, which has bifurcated into the two types shown in Figure, as mentioned in the article. One type standardizes components, as exemplified by the World Wide Web Consortium, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Internet Engineering Task Force's so-called protocol factory. The other type standardizes systems, including all the interfaces and dependencies among them, as well as so-called architectures, by which they mean the sanctioned network designs in which the systems are to be deployed. The good effects of standardizing components, rather than systems, can be seen clearly in the wide availability and low prices for personal computers, network interface cards, Ethernet LAN switches and wireless LANs. Eventually and inevitably, these effects will come to bear on so-called carrier-class equipment. The reason is simple: Standardizing components facilitates architectural and design flexibility as well as innovation and competition.
