ABSTRACT
This article discusses the emergence of liberalizing forces in Czechoslovakia since the Communist take-over. It was in 1963 that the last bastions of classical Stalinism began to de-Stalinize, rehabilitating the ghosts pf the Slansky trial and purging from the government some of those who were most responsible for Stalinist crimes. Up to the fall of 1963, Prime Minister Viliam Siroky, an old-time Stalinist wheel, in the Slovak Communist Party was dismissed from government. But others, primarily President Antonin Novotny himself still held the reins of power. The author of this article evaluates Novotny's government and his control over the Czechoslovakia.
