This article highlights changes in the Institute Education System of the Institute of Management Services (IMS) as of October 2004. The IMS is the professional and qualifying body for people in management services. Founded in 1941, it is one of the largest professional associations in the world dedicated to improving productivity. The main objectives of the Institute as laid down in the Articles of Association are: to create professional standards for the practice of management services; to provide a system of qualifying examinations to ensure recognition of those who aspire to the standards and ethics of the institute; to ensure that those professional standards are maintained; to encourage research and development in management services; to be a focal point of the practice and wider use of those disciplines; and to collaborate with other bodies in similar fields. At a recent meeting the IMS Council approved the recommendations for the changes to the Institute Education System as recommended by the Mansfield Review and in February 2004 a group was formed to pick up on the proposals and agree to an implementation plan. The group, comprising Harry Downes, Dick Bridges, Dennis Whitmore, and Peter Grice, has now met twice and devised some proposals. The IMS Certificate and Diploma are recognized outcomes and have a long history and track record. They are recognized as an industry standard. Therefore the proposal is to retain the titles of Certificate and Diploma but use the structures of the Accredited Productivity Practitioner model as outlined in the Mansfield Review. The intention is to provide flexibility to meet employer and local needs. The new strategy will be of devolved and retained responsibility. The proposal is that only a Certificate course shall be launched in 2004.
