This article focuses on the North West Region Board meeting in Bolton, England on August 21, 2004. David Blanchflower, the Institute's Deputy National Chairman, was in attendance at the meeting. Blanchflower, who has been a member of the Region Board since 1975, came to the meeting to perform a special task; and that was to honor Bob Fletcher who is the longest serving member of the region board--having been an active member since 1973. The Institute's Council of Management had voted to present Bob Fletcher with a plaque in recognition of his outstanding service to the Institute's membership; the enjoyable task of presenting the plaque had been entrusted to Blanchflower. Having served an engineering apprenticeship, Fletcher's first job in Management Services was in 1943 as a Rate Fixer. In 1954 he moved to the Cotton Board Productivity Center. Whilst working mainly in the Lancashire area he also undertook assignments in Holland and Switzerland. In 1962 he was appointed as lecturer in Work Study at the Oldham College of Technology. In 1967 he became Senior Lecturer in Work Study at the Bolton Institute of Technology--a post he held until his retirement in 1985. On concluding the presentation, Blanchflower summed up the feelings of all the Region Board members when he indicated that Fletcher richly deserved the award.
