The articles discusses that companies are starting to wise up to the fact that the more motivated and happy staff are, the more productive they will be. IT professionals have diverse and critical technical skills, but they will only deliver their optimum output when truly motivated by what they are doing. To optimise this motivation, both for work and personal development, people need to understand where work fits into the context of life as a whole. They also need to understand themselves at a level deeper than most of them commonly probe, and do more of the things that motivate them. It is critical for companies to have a meaningful purpose with which employees can engage. For example, communications operator Orange recognises that it is equally important to understand the motivations of employees as it is of customers. All new recruits are invited to make a "who I am" collage to share with colleagues. This is used to help employees work out how to align their personal purpose, values and objectives with those of the firm. Budget airline easyJet has an internal culture committee which recommended teaching active listening skills. The firm found that once people knew they would definitely be heard, they relaxed, stopped interrupting and built on each others ideas, confident they can make a difference.
