The article focuses on a pilot project to secure external Institute of IT Training (IITT) accreditation for about 20 learndirect centres. Garrie Owens, the executive manager of the Kent and Medway learndirect hub, took up the challenge and hosted this pilot project. Jointly funded by the Learning Skills Council and UfI, the pilot started in August last year and reached its conclusion by way of formal presentation of findings and awarding of certificates in December. Owens said that they have absolute confidence in their processes and the validity of the learning opportunities that they make available through the learndirect banner. He said that he must admit to a preoccupation, however, that they may be insular in their views and constantly seek the benefit of external expertise. He saw the IITT and its Learning Centre accreditation process as a source of such benefit. The accreditation process unfolded with half-day meetings at the nominated centres with all the discussion, review and evidence gathering that is a crucial part of the Institutes accreditation process. Using a mix of observation, balanced score-card analysis and tick box checking, a picture of each centre emerged. Reports were produced with a matrix of key performance indicators, corresponding actions and recommendations. INSETS: Accreditation;IITT one-day seminar programme 2004-2005.
