ABSTRACT

The article reports that the schools have a lot of catching up to do if teachers are to make the best use of information and communication technology (ICT) in the classroom. Earlier this year, Charles Clarke, the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, has announced that the government would be pumping £900m into ICT funding for education over the next two years, with the bulk of the money going to schools. The cash is there, said Clarke, the wired infrastructure has been put in place, and what is needed now is demonstrable improvement in the way ICT is used in schools. But Clarke sounded a note of caution, too. He said that the schools were significantly behind most other organisations in the way they use ICT to support leadership and management. This is a problem, not just because it means that schools are not run as efficiently as they should be, but also because by not using technology themselves, senior staff in schools are sending the wrong signals to their teachers.
