The article reports that the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) has launched a two-year project to train 70 of its engineers in Cisco networking standards. A lack of Cisco trainers in Cyprus led to the pound 250,000 training contract being awarded to Scottish IT training company Learning IT. CYTA, which employs nearly 2,500 people, provides telecoms facilities to the island's residents and manages fibre optic links with Greece, Israel, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt. The country's central position makes it a vital communications hub in the area, so it is essential that its staff keep up to date with the latest certifications. Learning IT worked with Cyprus-based IT solutions company SPS to meet the telecommunications firm's training needs. SPS has the local knowledge and is already actively involved in the telecoms industry, and they have the IT expertise, so it's an ideal partnership, said Allan Hunter, the cofounder and technical director of Learning IT. They've recently completed the first four-week training course in Cyprus and all candidates successfully completed the Cisco Systems courses.
