This article focuses on the bidding of the Hollywood studio. Time Warner Inc., lived up as a disciplined bidder as it has passed on Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., to go to a consortium headed by Sony Corp., for about $4.9 billion. Unfortunately, Time Warner could not reach agreement with MGM at a price that would have represented a prudent use of the growing financial capacity. Some analysts believe that means Time Warner will devote more resources to the up-coming Adelphia Communications Corp. auction.
