ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the book "A Century of the Essay," edited by David Daiches. This is another of those innumerable collections of essays all of which are more or less suitable for use in the standard freshman composition course. As the author observes, essays are written for many reasons. When they are interesting essays, they are part of the great conversation of history, but taken from their moment within that volume intended for competition in that most lucrative and restless of book markets, the freshman textbook field, they are only more pungently musty than an old copy of "Readers' Digest."
