ABSTRACT
This article presents author's experience in Soviet Union. I revisited Moscow, in 1936, in the course of a trip around the world. This time, an appointment was arranged for me with a Commissar who was, in effect, the Minister of Fine Arts. The assaults upon freedom of expression are by no means directed solely against political utterances and political affiliations.. That part of it is bad enough, but it is hardly half the story. Attempts at repression. are made against almost any comment on sex, religion, professional behavior, personal habits and racial or national characteristics that happens not to find favor with some special-interest group.
