ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the book "The Man Whistler," by Hesketh Pearson. Pearson has written a lively and amusing book about Whistler, but it is more a collection of anecdotes than a true biography. Whistler, of course, lends himself admirably to this procedure, since he spent a good part of his life holding the attention of his time by "bon mots", pranks and unpleasant exhibitions of egotistic belligerency. His famous lawsuit against Ruskin, after the latter had harshly criticized one of his pictures, brought him into the public eye in a way that his paintings had never done.
