The Superficial Aspect

Johnson, Gerald W.
December 1954
New Republic;12/20/54, Vol. 131 Issue 25, p9
This article focuses on American demagogue. It is characteristic of the demagogue facing the awful truth that Nemesis is upon him to develop a Samson complex and decide to pull down the temple to make a defiant and spectacular finish. After January Senator Joe McCarthy, deprived of a committee chairmanship, will continue to sit in the Senate. If Mccarthy could, in fact, wreck Eisenhower he would rival his Biblical prototype - he would slaughter more Republicans by his political death than he had slain in all his political life.
