The article analyzes Henry Steele Commager's book "Freedom, Loyalty and Dissent," to focuses on liberalism in the United States, of which pragmatists Oliver Wendell Holmes and John Dewey were staunch advocates. Commager's book, consisting of a series of essays, presents an eloquent plea for freedom of inquiry, dissent and experiment in all fields of Knowledge and all domains of social life. It highlights on the various problems that come in the way of pragmatism, the greatest problem of them being the absence of thought.
